Wine Estate Mobile App

DreamWeave Digital recently completed the Ken Forrester Wines mobile application. It is a cross platform mobile app that is available for download on iOS (Apple), Windows Phone & Google Play ( Android ). This app is the first of its kind in South Africa and in the World that allows users to find specific wines by their GPS location. So if you are one of the many fans of Ken Forrester Wines, and you feel like sipping on a glass of the delicious Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc, then you can choose this wine in the app and it will display all the outlets nationally ranked by closest to your GPS location. Users can then navigate to the outlet with GPS navigation and even mark wines or outlets to their “favourites” for reference later.

Key features of mobile apps for wine estates:

  1. Find wines in retail outlets by GPS location.
  2. Sell directly to the end consumer through the app at higher margin.
  3. Social media integration.
  4. Events calendar with navigation and add to calendar functionality.
  5. Offline information like agents, telephone numbers or tasting notes.
  6. Push notifications.
  7. YouTube / Video integration.

The app also allows users to buy wine securely and quickly at cellar door prices and have it sent to their door nationally. It was important to also take advantage of the offline capabilities that mobile apps provide. So we built in the tasting notes of the entire range of wines and even when there is no reception, Wi-Fi or 3G signal the tasting notes are still available to the user. The same goes for other information and important details inside the app.

With more consumers making use of video instead or reading traditional websites, one of the key features and most popular have been the “Hear it from Ken” section. In this part of the mobile app there is a short video series of Ken talking through his wines and it is certainly understandable that everyone now prefers watching a video from the man himself instead of reading through the tasting notes.

Currently in South Africa there are only 2 mobile apps for wine farms. Ken Forrester as a leader in the wine industry saw the value he could add to his loyal fans by putting this piece of technology in their pockets. One of the ways this is done is by means of push notifications. Once a new vintage is released or there is a special event or promotion, the app user receives a push message with a snippet enticing the app user to open the app and take action.

Push Notifications are the new premium way to communicate and are yielding results that are quite impressive compared to their old school counterparts which are email newsletters and sms campaigns. The open rate of a push notification is above 90% where a good open rate for a newsletter is only at 20%.
